Former Holy Cross girls basketball standout Erin (Leger) Doughty is moving up the collegiate coaching ranks at Marist.
Doughty has been promoted to associate head coach of the Marist College women’s basketball team, according to a press release from the school. Doughty, who already serves as the team’s recruiting coordinator, will work with the guards, do scouting and lead the program’s technologically-based initiatives.
“It is an honor and privilege to be a part of the Marist women’s basketball program and coaching staff,” Doughty said in the press release. “I’m thankful to [head coach Brian] Giorgis, [director of athletics] Tim Murray, and the administration for believing in me and what I bring to the program. Marist is a special place that means so much to me and my family and I’m excited to continue to work with coach Giorgis and our staff as we build on the excellent foundation we have established both on and off the court.”
This season will be the 14th on Marist’s staff for Doughty, who started coaching as a senior in the 2005-06 campaign.
“I’m ecstatic for Erin to receive this promotion,” Giorgis said in the press release. “She’s the most decorated assistant coach in the MAAC and it’s very well deserved. We couldn’t be any happier for Erin.”
Before coaching, Doughty was a walk-on player for the Red Foxes from 2002-2005, when she was known by her maiden name Leger. In high school, Erin helped Holy Cross finish as Class L state-runner up in 2002. She was the program’s top three-point shooter by the time she was done playing for the Crusaders. Erin also played volleyball at Holy Cross.
Doughty was a two-time MAAC All-Academic team member during her playing days. She graduated from Marist in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree before earning her master’s in Psychology in 2008. Erin Leger later became Erin Doughty after marrying Mike Doughty, who was in the sports information department at Marist when the Red Foxes made an incredible Sweet 16 run during the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Mike Doughty helped handle media requests for that 2007 team, and Erin was a second-year assistant coach. Marist lost to the powerful Tennessee Lady Volunteers and legendary head coach Pat Summitt.
Erin got to shake hands with Summitt, someone whom she had admired, according to a story on the Poughkeepsie Journal website. Erin and Mike live in Poughkeepsie with their son Chase and daughter Fallon.
