The fall sports state tournaments are well underway, and the results have been mixed for area teams.
Some teams moved on in girls soccer on Monday, but there was plenty of heartache to go around as well. Girls volleyball teams began their state journeys on Monday evening. Here’s what happened:
St. Paul wins again
The No. 17 Falcons continued their run in Class S with a 7-1 victory over top-seeded Windham Tech on the road. St. Paul defeated No. 16 Wolcott Tech-Torrington over the weekend to open the tournament. The next round figures to be a big challenge when the Falcons take on eighth-seeded Cromwell, the Class S defending champion, on Thursday on the road.
NVL finalists done
Both top-seeded Woodland (Class M) and fifth-seeded Holy Cross (Class L) saw their seasons come to premature ends at home.
The Hawks were upended by No. 16 Tolland, 3-0, while the Crusaders lost a tough one to No. 12 Guilford, 1-0. Woodland and Holy Cross both had tremendous seasons, but this wasn’t the way either one wanted to see them end.
Mills marches on
Fourth-seeded Lewis Mills downed No. 13 Stonington, 3-1, at the Nassahegan Recreation Complex in a Class M second round clash. The Spartans host No. 21 Weston on Thursday.
Crusaders, Falcons win on court
Holy Cross and St. Paul each won Class S first round volleyball matchups. The No. 7 Crusaders swept No. 26 Housatonic-Falls Village, 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-16). In Bristol, the No. 12 Falcons swept No. 21 Comp Sci, 3-0 (25-12, 25-3, 25-11). Both teams play Wednesday. Holy Cross is home against No. 10 Canton while St. Paul is on the road at No. 5 Coventry, a perennial state power.
Spartans also victorious
In Class M, No. 20 Lewis Mills took down No. 13 Abbott Tech-Danbury, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-17). The Spartans are back on the road at No. 4 Joel Barlow-Redding, a perennial state power.
Several see seasons end
Wolcott, Kaynor Tech, Kennedy and WCA were all swept out of their respective volleyball brackets.
