NVL roundup: Holy Cross and Woodland girls, Wolcott boys all win in quarterfinals

Grace D’Amico had four goals and an assist for the Holy Cross girls soccer team in their 9-0 win over Oxford in the NVL tournament quarterfinal round in Waterbury.

The second-seeded Holy Cross girls soccer team rolled to a 9-0 win over seventh-seeded Oxford on Tuesday in a Naugatuck Valley League tournament quarterfinal at Ray Snyder Sr. Field (Municipal Stadium).

Grace D’Amico scored four times and added an assist for Holy Cross, which faces third-seeded Watertown in a 2 p.m. semifinal game at Wolcott High School’s Joe Monroe Field. The Warriors beat sixth-seeded St. Paul, 2-1, in overtime.

Emma Cassetta had two goals and an assist, and Julia Benvegnu added a goal and three assists for the Crusaders. Bella Milburn totaled a goal and two assists, Kylie Dennis chipped in a goal, and Riley Fenn put in an assist. Gabriella Rosado and Mary Benvegnu combined for two saves.

WATERTOWN 2, ST. PAUL 1: The Falcons lost a rough one on Sarah Krayeske’s penalty kick in overtime.

For St. Paul, Melia Benson scored and Corinne Mola made 19 saves.

WOODLAND 7, NAUGATUCK 0: The top-seeded Hawks made quick work of the eighth-seeded Greyhounds.

Sophomore Guiliana Celotto and freshman Tianna Franklin each scored twice for Woodland, which plays the winner of No. 4 Seymour and No. 5 Ansonia on Saturday at noon at Wolcott High. The Wildcats and Chargers meet this evening at six o’clock at Seymour High.

Michaela Gasparri, Emma Henriques and Skylar DeFrank all found the goal for the Hawks while Ava Naclerio and Megan Bernegger combined for two saves.

BOYS

WOLCOTT 2, OXFORD 0: The third-seeded Eagles got goals from Damien Georges and Mandjou Keita, and an assist from Tyson Brenes, in their quarterfinal home win over the sixth-seeded Wolverines.

Sam Berninger tallied three saves for Wolcott, which will face second-seeded Seymour, a 2-0 winner over seventh-seeded Torrington, in a Saturday semifinal. Joey Carrafiello scored both goals for the Wildcats.

The Wolcott-Seymour semifinal is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Seymour High School. The Eagles beat the Wildcats, 2-0, in the regular season finale for both teams on Oct. 16 at Seymour.

NAUGATUCK 4, HOLY CROSS 0: Tommy Okesson made two saves for the eighth-seeded Crusaders in their quarterfinal loss.
