Crusaders, Lancers sweep their respective cross country city championship meets

For the fourth straight year, HOLY CROSS swept the Waterbury City Cross Country Championships on Friday afternoon at Bucks Hill Park.

The Crusader boys finished first with a score of 27, and WCA was second with 50. Kaynor Tech was third (60), followed by Crosby in fourth (112) and Wilby in fifth (135).

The Crusader girls took first with a score of 15, and WCA was second with 55. Kaynor Tech was third (68).

Holy Cross senior Jake Ferrare won the boys individual race for the third straight time, finishing in 16:56.6. Kaynor Tech junior Daniel Reilly was second (17:27.4), followed by WCA sophomore Jordan Thomas (17:54). The Crusaders took five of the top nine spots overall. Crosby’s top finisher was junior Emmanuel Aca, who placed 13th in 20:34. The top Wilby runner was junior Maximilian Guaman-Caguana, who finished 27th in 27:31.2. Kennedy also competed, but didn’t have a team score. The fastest Eagle runner was freshman Josue Miranda, who took 18th place in 21:02.5.

Holy Cross sophomore Sofia Alonzo won the girls individual race for the second straight time, finishing in 21:24.9. Junior teammates Reagan Zupkus (23:09) and Gina Barry (23:20) finished second and third. They were followed by Crusader sophomore Meghan Donnelly in fourth (23:50.5) and junior Marley Mestek in fifth (23:51.8). WCA’s top finisher was sophomore Allie Obuobi-Djan, who took sixth in 24:07.7. The top Kaynor Tech finisher was junior Taylor O’Connell, who placed ninth in 25:11.6. Wilby, Crosby and Kennedy didn’t have team scores, but still competed. The top Wildcat was junior Krystalee Crespo (20th, 29:57.6), the top Bulldog was junior Noellani Gillians (22nd, 30:05.5), and the top Eagle was freshman Nadyne Rivera (25th, 31:24.6).

The Connecticut Technical Conference and Naugatuck Valley League championship meets are both scheduled for Wednesday.

BRISTOL EASTERN swept the Bristol City Championship for the second straight year on Thursday afternoon at Page Park.

The Lancer girls outdistanced St. Paul, 30-39. Bristol Central finished third (55).

The Lancer boys sprinted past Central, 19-42. St. Paul placed third (85).

Eastern junior Kaelyn Gonzalez won the girls individual race for the third straight time, finishing in 22:37. Central sophomore Emersyn Mazzei was second (23:31), followed by Eastern sophomore Calliope Gallagher in third (23:47). The top St. Paul finisher was senior Madalyne Bielecki, who claimed fourth in 23:58. The Lancers had four runners in the top eight overall to get past the Falcons, whose fourth runner took ninth.

Eastern junior Jase Koczur won the boys individual race for the first time, finishing in 17:59. Eastern seniors Brendan Tartarelli (18:48) and Kyle Kelley (18:55) followed in second and third. The top Central finisher was sophomore Noah Pellerin, who claimed fourth in 19:08. The top St. Paul runner was freshman Bekru Danko, who placed 17th in 22:23. The Lancers got their five scoring runners all in the top seven overall.

The Central Connecticut Conference championship meet is scheduled for Tuesday.
