Wolcott native Cam Maldonado was 0-for-3 entering the top of the seventh inning of Monday night’s third and final game of the Cape Cod Baseball League World Series in Bourne, Mass.
Maldonado’s Harwich Mariners had a one-run lead on the host Bourne Braves, and there was a runner on second base with one out. Maldonado drilled the first pitch he saw off the right field wall for an RBI double. The run, scored by Macon Winslow, was a big one as Harwich held on for a 4-3 win and a CCBL championship. The championship is the fifth in the CCBL modern era for the Mariners.
Maldonado also singled in the top of the ninth inning. He was caught stealing and finished Monday’s game 2-for-5. In six postseason games, Maldonado went 10-for-28 (.357) with an .831 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage). He had a double and triple amongst his team-high 10 hits. Maldonado drove in three runs and scored five.
During the regular season, Maldonado posted team highs in batting average (.258), hits (32), RBI (24), runs (22) and stolen bases (13). His five home runs tied for the team lead with Michael Anderson.
Maldonado, who attended Hamden Hall Country Day School, is an incoming junior at Northeastern University.
