Tough times in volleyball semifinals as Eastern, Central, Cross all fall

The all-Bristol Class L girls volleyball final wasn’t meant to be.

Both No. 10 Bristol Eastern and No. 9 Bristol Central were defeated in semifinal matches on Wednesday night inside Naugatuck High School’s Ed Mariano Gymnasium.

The same held true for No. 8 Holy Cross in Class S, where it lost its semifinal match on Tuesday. Here’s more about each of the semifinals:

NO. 3 FARMINGTON 3, NO. 10 BRISTOL EASTERN 0

The Lancers fell by set scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-12 in the first match of the doubleheader in Naugatuck. Eastern finished its season with a record of 15-9.

The Lancers say goodbye to seniors Adrianna Reay, Gabby Caucci, Andrea Matir-Perez, Kaitlynn Beaulieu and Samara Paranzino.

NO. 12. ST. JOSEPH 3, NO. 9 BRISTOL CENTRAL 1

The Rams claimed the first set, 33-31, but the Cadets scooped up the last three by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-23 to win the nightcap.

Sophomore Lily Kirk paced Central (19-9) with 26 kills while junior Grace Higgins joined her in double-figure kills with 13. Freshman Isabella Alves added seven kills and sophomore Ella Pratt contributed six kills. Pratt (5) and Alves (4) led the way in total blocks while junior Samantha Licki added two. Junior Daigelis Figueroa paced the Rams with 28 digs. Higgins had 18, Kirk 16 and senior Alex Rivera 14. Rivera dished out an impressive 52 assists with just a single ball-handling error in her final match. Kirk, Higgins and Figueroa each had 28 serve receives.

The Rams say goodbye to seniors Rivera, Lindsey Brothwell, Kate Schilling and Leah Sklenka.

NO. 5 HADDAM-KILLINGWORTH 3, NO. 8 HOLY CROSS 0

The Crusaders couldn’t keep up with the Cougars, falling by set scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-23 in the match at New Britain High School’s Chick Shea Gymnasium.

Senior Sarah Medeiros had 10 kills and four digs, senior Antonia Leary tallied nine kills and three blocks, and senior Isabella Oliver added 20 assists for Holy Cross. The Crusaders finished the season at 19-7, and they say goodbye to seniors Medeiros, Leary, Oliver, Jasmin Howard, Maria Codianni and Layla Pompei.
