St. Paul senior standout Tyler Turner put together a terrific effort in his final NVL indoor track and field championship meet on Friday night at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Turner claimed two golds, finishing first in the 300-meter dash (36.70 seconds) and long jump (21 feet, 5.25 inches). Turner also helped the Falcons’ 1,600 sprint medley team finish third (4:00.62), along with teammates Landin Boutot, Declan Toland and Colin Reilly.
Turner was one of three individual winners from the area. Another was also from St. Paul, and that was senior Allison Barton. The senior won gold in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.87 seconds. The other local winner was Holy Cross junior Bryan Elliott, who took gold in the high jump at six feet. Elliott took silver in the long jump behind Turner with an effort of 19 feet, 10.25 inches. For his efforts, Elliott was named most outstanding male performer in field events.
Crosby senior Brian Dessalines also earned a silver medal in the 55 dash (6.68). He was just ahead of bronze medalist Jamare Hall, a senior from Wilby, who ran the race in 6.70 seconds. Other individual boys bronze medalists were: Khairi Morey of Kennedy (300 dash, 38.44); Jake Ferrare of Holy Cross (3,200 meters, 11:14.23); Daniel Cleary of Wolcott (pole vault, 9 feet); Nickholas Bensavage of Wolcott (shot put, 40 feet, 3.50 inches). Kennedy sophomore Erica Austin took bronze in the 55 dash (7.59). Kennedy also had a bronze medal relay team in the 4×200 (Austin, Shania McCall, Jasmine Ogando, Kaianni Jones; 1:52.85). Holy Cross had a bronze medal relay team in the 1,600 sprint medley (Kaitlyn Alagno, Shantavia Bennett, Raeanna Byrnes, Aurora Miller; 4:58.42). Kennedy also had a boys bronze medal relay team in the 4×200 (Je-Dan Jackson, Dontae Roman, Morey, Kashawn Smith; 1:38.96).
The highest area team finish belonged to the Kennedy girls, who were fourth. Naugatuck won both the girls and boys team championships for the second straight season. Full results can be found at https://www.nestiming.com.
