Five local girls’ volleyball teams have reached the 10-win mark with another threatening to get there at about the three-quarter mark of the regular season.
Holy Cross (12-2) and Kaynor Tech (12-3) lead the way with 12 wins apiece. Bristol Central (11-4) and St. Paul (11-4) are right behind them, as is Bristol Eastern (10-3). WCA (8-7) is just two wins away from double digits.
Holy Cross has won seven straight matches and 12 of its last 13. Kaynor Tech has won two straight since a 3-1 home loss to Wright Tech. The Panthers have been able to bounce back with at least one win after each of their three losses this season.
Central lost two of its first three matches to begin the season. The Rams are 10-2 since that tough start and they are currently on a three-match winning streak.
St. Paul has rebounded with two straight wins after a 3-0 home loss to Holy Cross. The Falcons started the season 3-2, but they have gone 8-2 since with their losses coming against the Crusaders and perennial NVL stalwart Woodland.
Eastern bounced back from two straight losses with a 3-0 home win over Middletown on Friday night. It was an emotional time for the Lancers after the loss of Eastern alum Alex Hamzy (Class of 2006), a Bristol police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty late Wednesday night. Dustin DeMonte, a Middletown High Class of 2005 graduate and sergeant in Bristol, was shot and killed in the same incident. Friday’s match was the first for both teams since the tragedy.
“Tonight, we had a 🏐 match at BE vs Middletown HS, each HS an alma mater of the officers who tragically lost their lives,” read a tweet on Bristol Eastern girls’ volleyball’s account. “The Middletown team and coaching staff was so kind and thoughtful and showed such love and respect to our community and BPD.”
Writer’s note: Great show of class and respect by Middletown on Friday night after such an unbelievable tragedy.
WCA plays Wilby on Tuesday and will be looking to snap a three-match losing streak. The Spartans also have home matches against Platt Tech-Milford and Kennedy in the upcoming week.
