The Holy Cross football team entered Saturday afternoon’s game ready for its matchup against WCA at Municipal Stadium’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field.
Both teams were 3-0 going into the game, but the Crusaders dispelled the notion that the Spartans would be the team leaving the Snyder Field synthetic turf with a 4-0 record. After WCA pulled to within a point on a D’Vonte Lane one-yard touchdown run, Holy Cross scored the next 34 points on the way to a 48-12 runaway victory. The Crusaders improved to 4-0. Next up is a showdown with defending NVL champion Naugatuck, also undefeated at 4-0, on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Snyder Field. The Spartans fell to 3-1. Next up for WCA is a big game against Crosby (3-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Jimmy Lee Stadium.
Marques Campbell had a big day for Holy Cross with three touchdowns – two receiving and one rushing – and one interception. Campbell’s top highlight was a one-handed catch on a pass that was thrown behind him for a 34-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Drew Caouette threw four touchdown passes, two to Campbell and two to Carsten Donovan. Tom Ligi ran for two touchdowns. The Crusader defense locked in after the Lane touchdown. The Spartans contributed with mistakes and penalties.
Unfortunately for WCA, injuries were an issue. Lane and quarterbacks KaVaughn Canady and Zyaire Ettson all left the game at some point. Canady and Ettson returned to the game, and Lane did not. Dasani Yates had a spectacular 51-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Yates ran to his left, reversed his field, then took off down the Spartan sideline for a touchdown.
