Gary Hovhanessian has had some pretty good success in his time as head coach of St. Paul softball.
In his 18th season as head coach, Hovhanessian has an over .500 record. There have been all-league and all-state players, and there have been appearances in the state tournament. There was the amazing run to the Class S state championship game in 2017.
On April 30, Hovhanessian and St. Paul flashed back to when his career began, 2005, when the Falcons faced Farmington. St. Paul was in a different league back then, and Hovhanessian’s daughters were playing for Farmington.
This version of St. Paul claimed a 14-1 win in five innings over Farmington on its home diamond in Bristol. The victory was the 200th of Hovhanessian’s career. Freshman Lauren Kozlak gave up five hits and struck out eight over five innings of work in the circle. The Falcons used an eight-run second inning, which included back-to-back doubles from senior tri-captain Catie Wootton and freshman Taylor Williams.
St. Paul is 5-11 with four games left in the regular season. Hovhanessian’s career record is 201-162.
