Week 4 football: Wolcott faces major home challenge against Ansonia

The Wolcott football team returns to the friendly confines of Joe Monroe Field tomorrow night following its first loss of the season against WCA.

What awaits the Eagles (1-1) is a major challenge in the form of NVL perennial power Ansonia (3-0). The Chargers have won 98 straight league games, including last Friday’s 28-7 home victory over Holy Cross. Wolcott will need to play opportunistic, mistake-free football against an Ansonia team that has outscored its first three opponents by a 104-26 margin.

The local schedule actually begins this afternoon when Holy Cross hosts Crosby at 2:30 at Municipal Stadium. The Crusaders enter at 2-1 while the Bulldogs are 0-1. Crosby’s game last week was postponed because of a COVID case and quarantine in the Oxford football program.

Friday

Bristol Central goes for its third straight win when it travels to Farmington (0-3) for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The River Hawks have been outscored 124-34 in their first three games. The Rams are coming off a 28-18 home win over Wethersfield last Friday.

Bristol Eastern looks for a bounce-back effort at Plainville (2-1) at 6:30 p.m. The Lancers lost a non-conference contest to Wilbur Cross, 28-18, last Friday.

WCA (1-1), which had the big 32-18 win over Wolcott last Friday, is the road team against Wilby (0-3) at 7 p.m. at Municipal Stadium. The Wildcats have been outscored 128-18 in their first three games, though they played better in a 24-6 loss to Watertown last Thursday. Wilby was tied at halftime of that game, 6-6.

St. Paul (1-1) is at Naugatuck at 7 p.m. The Falcons have a short week following their first win of the season, 30-14, over Derby last Saturday at McPhee Field. The Greyhounds had a bye week last week to stew over a 27-19 home loss to Torrington on Sept. 17.

Saturday

Wilcox/Kaynor (0-3) is at O’Brien Tech (1-2) for an 11 a.m. kickoff. The co-op has been outscored 128-27 in three games.
