WEEK 1 FOOTBALL: Holy Cross wins behind Kacprzyski while Marshall paces Eastern

The first week of the 2021 high school football season is over, and three local teams were victorious.

Holy Cross captured a 34-18 victory at Torrington on Friday. Also on Friday night, Bristol Eastern ran away from E.O. Smith-Storrs, 35-6, at home. In the only matchup between two local teams, Kennedy downed St. Paul, 14-0, at Municipal Stadium, on Friday. Here are some highlights from those games:

  • Holy Cross quarterback David Kacprzyski was part of three touchdowns. He tossed scoring passes of 31 and 24 yards to Kevin Matiz and Mahkai Wilson. Kacprzyski also scored on a 17-yard run. Thomas Ligi ran for touchdowns of four and five yards.
  • It was the Alex Marshall show for Bristol Eastern. Marshall erupted for 242 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.
  • Dereck Ledee had a solid night for Kennedy. He threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Sean Reid and ran in another score from three yards out. The Eagles were also stout on defense, holding the Falcons to less than 100 total yards of offense.

Some local teams came up short in their season openers. On Thursday night, Wilby was downed by Ansonia, 48-6, at Municipal Stadium. Bristol Central lost a sloppy affair at Bloomfield, 7-6, on Friday. Crosby fell to Woodland, 38-27, at Jimmy Lee Stadium while WCA lost to Watertown, 22-8. On Saturday, the new technical school co-op of Wilcox and Kaynor was defeated by Quinebaug Valley, 48-13, at Falcon Field in Meriden. Here are some highlights from those games:

  • Wilby’s first and only touchdown happened on the opening possession of the second half. Aaron James found Jamare Hall on a 43-yard scoring pass.
  • Victor Rosa scampered 53 yards for the lone Bristol Central touchdown.
