St. Paul mashes its way to 3 straight wins

The St. Paul baseball team unleashed an offensive explosion on the Oxford, Torrington and Watertown pitching staffs during a trio of games last week, and the result was three wins.

The Falcons began the week simply enough with an 8-4 road victory over Oxford on Monday. St. Paul had two home runs that day, one apiece by Ryan Daniels and Mario Izzo.

On Thursday, the Falcons blew open a close game against Torrington with a 15-run eruption in the top of the fourth inning at Fuessenich Park. St. Paul won, 28-9, in five innings. Ryan Daniels highlighted the outburst with a pair of three-run home runs, which coach Vic Rinaldi said were both legitimate shots. It was very windy at Fuessenich Park on Thursday, but Daniels’ homers didn’t need the help. Jamie Leggett added to the onslaught with a pair of two-run singles, and Steve Morelli contributed two singles that brought home three runs. The Falcons wound up batting around twice in that fourth inning. Twice. Yikes.

St. Paul was home Friday against Watertown for another back-and-forth game. The Indians scored eight times in the top of the fifth inning to grab a 12-9 lead, only to see the Falcons plate nine runs in the bottom frame. Morelli (RBI double) and Daniels (RBI double) were in the middle of the rally again, and Mario Izzo blasted a home run, his second of the game, to bring home three runs. Devin Kulas added a two-run single during the eruption. Izzo wasn’t the only Falcon to launch two big flies on Friday. Casey Cerruto also homered twice and like Izzo drove in six runs. Izzo and Cerruto each had a two-run homer and a three-run homer.

For the week, St. Paul scored 58 runs and hit eight home runs. There’s no way any offense can stay that hot over an entire season, but what the Falcons did this past week was still incredible.
