This date in history: Holy Cross baseball completes a Crusader Class S sweep

June 10, 2017: When Holy Cross baseball won a 13-9 slugfest against Lyman Memorial on this date at Middletown’s Palmer Field, it completed a Crusader sweep of Class S on the diamond.

The top-seeded Crusaders unleashed a 14-hit attack against the Bulldogs in the championship game. With the win, Holy Cross baseball secured its first state championship. The Crusader softball team was there to cheer the baseball team on a day after its Class S victory over St. Paul.

Tim Zupkus led the 14-hit parade with a 3-for-3 day that included an RBI, run scored and two walks. Brian Parzyck was 3-for-4 and finished a home run short of the cycle (not a single, as I wrote in the original story) on the way to an RBI and two runs scored. Fran Phelan Jr. (three runs scored) and Connor Goggin each supplied two hits and three RBI. Adam Razza had two hits and three RBI while Matt Bonvicini added three RBI and a run scored. Will Marshall and Matt Cipriano each contributed an RBI.

About that sweep: Holy Cross baseball won on Saturday, and Holy Cross softball did the same on Friday against St. Paul, 4-0.

The Crusaders used strong efforts from freshman Jenna Mowad and senior Sarah Lawton to dispatch the Falcons. For Holy Cross softball, it was the third straight state championship.

All Mowad did in the first two at bats of her inaugural state championship appearance was smack a solo home run and deliver an RBI double. Mowad was named MVP for her efforts.

Lawton had a two-run single at the plate, but it was her effort in the circle that stood out most of all. She struck out 13, walked one, and gave up just three hits.
