Eastern, Central bow out of volleyball state tournament

The Bristol Eastern and Bristol Central girls volleyball teams each saw their Class L state tournament runs come to an end on Saturday in the quarterfinal round.

The top-seeded Lancers lost for just the second time all season, 3-2, to the eighth-seeded Woodstock Academy Centaurs inside the Thomas M. Monahan Gymnasium at Bristol Eastern High School. The 10th-seeded Rams were defeated, 3-0, by the second-seeded Avon Falcons at Avon High School.

Here’s what happened in each match:

Woodstock Academy 3, Bristol Eastern 2
(25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 26-28, 15-13)

The Lancers battled for five sets against the Centaurs, but couldn’t keep their magical season alive. Zoe Lowe tallied 28 kills and three aces while Ariana Caucci added eight kills. Hannah Webber had 13 kills; Leah Chipman passed out 51 assists; and Rebecca Bender added 16 digs. The CCC tournament runner-up finished the season with an overall record of 23-2. It was the final match for Eastern seniors Bender, Caucci and Brooke Dorsio. The Lancers return several key players from this year’s team in 2020 and should be back for another run.

Avon 3, Bristol Central 0
(25-19, 25-20, 25-19)

The Rams were able to stay close to the powerful Falcons, but not close enough to take a set from the home team. Central, which defeated No. 23 Suffield and No. 26 St. Joseph to reach the quarterfinal round, finished with an overall record of 17-6. It was the final match for Ram seniors Peyton Greger, Ashleigh Clark, Kathryn Ross, Julia Pahl and Avery Hamilton.
