The high school soccer state tournaments are an exciting time in the fall.
Matches are usually very competitive and need the full 80 minutes, and sometimes a lot more than that. Some have to go through a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, where a golden goal will win the match. If the match is still tied, it comes down to penalty kicks.
On Tuesday, the Bristol Central girls soccer team became the second local squad to go down via penalty kicks. The St. Paul boys were the first, and that happened on Monday. The Rams, seeded 17th, lost by a score of 2-1 to the No. 16 Brookfield Bobcats. Brookfield converted three penalty kicks to two for Central.
Still, the Rams don’t get into overtime if they don’t show the heart that they’ve had throughout the season. Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Sophia Torreso played the ball wide to teammate Hannah Aldieri, according to a post on the Central girls soccer Twitter account. Aldieri took the ball down the sideline, then crossed it to Ava Bouchard, who scored and tied the match, 1-1. Torreso teamed with Christine Attle, Emily Passamano and others to help get the match into overtime. Keeper Liz Hintz made some big saves in overtime to get the match to penalty kicks.
Central finished the season with a record of 8-6-3. It was the final match for Ram seniors Hintz, Faith Roy, Mia Hinton, and Maria Santilli.
