Municipal Stadium’s turf facility underwent major renovations and received big improvements during the spring and summer.
Gone is the aging turf on Ray Snyder Sr. Field. It has been replaced with a beautiful new green FieldTurf surface, which includes lines for football and soccer that are easy to see.
Joan Joyce Field, home to city softball, has a brown infield instead of just green with painted lines running all over it. The same goes for the baseball diamond of Bill Ryan Field at the other end of the facility. The locker room and restroom facilities look terrific and the building fits right in aesthetically with the Municipal Stadium baseball press box that also houses Frankie’s.
Crosby’s Jimmy Lee Stadium served as host for city football games in the month of September. On Oct. 5, Kennedy played Waterbury Career Academy in the first game on the new surface of Snyder Field. On Thursday, the Spartans were the home team against Torrington in a battle of 3-1 squads. WCA held off a late Torrington charge and won 19-17 to improve to 4-1 on the season.
The WCA-Torrington game was the first time I have seen the new facilities. I was covering the game in my new full-time job as a sports writer for the Waterbury Republican-American. I love how the renovations came out. It’s a beautiful field with actual locker rooms and bathrooms as opposed to portable buildings and bathrooms. It looks like a facility that will be a great host for football, soccer, baseball and softball games for years to come.
