Waterbury native Jeremiah Vargas has been seeing more time on the mound for the Westfield Starfires, an expansion team in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England.
The right-hander from Kennedy and The Taft School has pitched in six games, but three of those have come in the past week. Vargas has pitched in relief all six games and owns a solid 1.22 ERA. In 7.1 innings pitched, Vargas has yielded three hits, struck out eight and walked four.
Vargas pitched in an 8-6 win over the North Shore Navigators on July 5. He threw an inning and allowed just a walk. On July 8, he struck out both batters he faced in 10-4 loss to the Pittsfield Suns. Vargas pitched again on Wednesday and struck out two in an inning of work in a 13-4 victory over the Nashua Silver Knights.
Vargas has batted in 19 games this season and is hitting .174 with nine runs scored, a double and two RBI in 46 at bats. He has walked five times and stolen a base. Vargas has not made an error in his time on the mound and at shortstop.
Vargas will be a senior at Stonehill College this fall. He is studying finance.
