MAY 30 SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: No. 11 Wolcott runs away from No. 6 Ellington

Wolcott softball kept the good times rolling in the Class M state tournament, this time on the road.

The No. 11 Eagles knocked off No. 6 Ellington 7-1 in a second round game on Thursday at Ellington High School. Wolcott improved to 17-6 and will play at No. 3 Waterford (19-3) on Friday at 4 p.m.

The Eagles held a slim 1-0 lead entering the top of the sixth inning, but scored three runs in each of the final two frames to go ahead 7-0. The Knights scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Alexis Boyce was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI for Wolcott, which had 11 hits. Kaitlyn Ouellette went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBI while Madison Rotella had a single and two RBI. Josie Cammarata singled, scored two runs and drove in another while Katie Cosmos had a single and RBI. Hailey Krol and Jade Abdul-Lateef each had a run scored.

Ouellette pitched a complete game and gave up one run on three hits. She struck out 10 and didn’t allow a walk. Ouellette threw 58 of her 72 pitches for strikes.

Bristol Eastern 2, Pomperaug 0

The No. 7 Lancers (17-5) shut down the No. 23 Panthers in a Class L second round game at Casey Field. Bristol Eastern will play second-seeded Masuk (20-1) on Friday at 4 p.m. in Monroe.

Erin Girard allowed only three hits, struck out seven, walked three and hit a batter in a complete-game effort. The Lancers had just four hits of their own, but three of them came in the critical sixth inning when they scored both runs. Zoe Lowe had an RBI double with one out to score Taylor Keegan and give Bristol Eastern a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Alyssa Hackling’s RBI single brought home Lowe to make it 2-0. Keegan’s single in the sixth inning was the 100th hit of her career, and she did that in just three years.

St. Paul 6, Hale Ray 4

The No. 6 Falcons (18-4) held off the No. 11 Little Noises in a Class S second round home game. St. Paul will play a familiar foe in No. 3 Holy Cross (19-4) on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Waterbury.

Katrina Roy, Jess Persechino and Abby Poirot each had two hits while Anna Olis had two runs scored. St. Paul and Holy Cross have met in the Class S state tournament in each of the past two seasons, and the Crusaders won both times, including the 2017 state title.

Holy Cross 3, Old Lyme 0

Speaking of the No. 3 Crusaders, they knocked off the No. 14 Wildcats in a game that was moved to Joan Joyce Field (Municipal Stadium). Freshman Brianna Greenlaw tripled, homered and drove in three runs for Holy Cross in the win, according to a roundup on the website of The Day.
