Holy Cross already had a bunch to celebrate on Saturday at the campus on Oronoke Road.
First and foremost, Holy Cross High School is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and this is Homecoming Weekend. There have been events at the school all weekend long, from a student spirit assembly to a bonfire. The festivities actually started on Thursday.
You can throw football in there as well. Holy Cross hosted NVL Brass Division rival Kennedy on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Crusaders gave those in attendance even more to be happy about with a 24-18 victory over the Eagles. Holy Cross improved to 3-2 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the Brass Division. Kennedy fell to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the Brass Division.
Corey Fappiano and Qaron Brown continued to be a lethal 1-2 pass-and-catch combination for Holy Cross. In the run game, Alex Ward ran for two touchdowns and was part of all three two-point conversions for the Crusaders.
Matt Torres threw three touchdown passes for Kennedy, one of which was actually a well-executed hook-and-ladder trick play, according to a story from Mark Jaffee on The Zone website.
Before the game, Holy Cross honored Tom Perrelli, a 1997 co-captain who meant an awful lot to the football program and the school in general. The Tom Perrelli, Jr. ’98 Memorial Garden was dedicated in a ceremony. A quote on the plaque of the memorial garden reads “Faith, Family, and Football.”
The Thomas P. Perrelli, Jr. ’98 Memorial Scholarship is given to a deserving football player entering his junior or senior season who exhibits leadership, dedication, enthusiasm and spirit as a member of the Crusaders.
