Tribury Twisters rally for big Tri-State win over Terryville Black Sox

The Terryville Black Sox were feeling good entering Thursday evening’s game against the Tribury Twisters at Bucks Hill Park.

Terryville had just hammered the defending Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League champion Naugatuck Dogs 8-0 on the road on Tuesday night. What the Black Sox ran into on Thursday was the depth of Tri-State, in the form of the Twisters.

Tribury stunned Terryville 3-2 in walk-off fashion in eight innings. The Twisters improved to 4-5 while the Black Sox dropped to 7-2.

Tribury’s Nate Zappone tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning, then won it in the bottom of the eighth with a hit down the third baseline. The game-winning hit scored Mike Rosa, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Terryville lamented opportunities missed after the game. The Black Sox had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the eighth, only to strike out and not get the go-ahead run home. Terryville also left the bases loaded in the third.

Tribury winning pitcher Ben Guisto wasn’t overpowering (six strikeouts in eight innings), but he got the job done time after time and limited the Terryville damage to two runs. The Black Sox scored a run in the second on a Kyle Tehan sacrifice fly that brought home Chris Comeau (double). Tehan doubled to open the fourth inning and came around to score the second run and put Terryville ahead 2-0.

Zappone started the Tribury comeback with a double leading off the bottom of the fourth. Zappone came home on a single by Mike Rosa to get the Twisters to within 2-1. Tribury caught Terryville in the sixth, then beat them in the eighth.

Next up for the Twisters is a game Sunday against the Winsted Whalers at 9 a.m. at Winsted’s Walker Field. The Black Sox play the Torrington Rebels later that evening at 6 o’clock at Torrington’s Fuessenich Park.
