St. Paul’s Sturm wins second straight hammer title

St. Paul senior Christian Sturm entered the 2018 hammer throw state championship competition as the No. 2 seed behind Coventry junior Joseph Lanham.

Sturm’s seed mark was an even 165 feet while Lanham came in at 184-11. The gap between the two competitors didn’t seem to bother Sturm, who put in another terrific effort on Wednesday and claimed his second straight hammer throw state championship. The competition was held at Manchester High School.

Sturm threw the hammer 187 feet, 7 inches, more than 14 feet better than the top one from Lanham (173-05). Sturm found the landing area with four of his six attempts, and three of the four throws were 173-07 or longer. Besides the top toss of 187-07, Sturm also threw the hammer 185-05.

As a junior, Sturm won the state hammer throw with a mark of 158-05. He finished fourth as a sophomore with a throw of 138-09.
