Second-seeded Holy Cross softball found itself in a pitchers’ duel with seventh-seeded Hale Ray of Moodus in a Class S quarterfinal on Friday afternoon.
Sarah Lawton and Katrina Ceceri were both dealing, and the Crusaders led just 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. That frame was the difference, with Holy Cross scoring three times to go up 4-0, which wound up being the final score.
Gabby Goldman and Hannah Brown had back-to-back singles with one out. Allie Brown’s sacrifice bunt moved Goldman and Hannah Brown to second and third. Sarah Lawton walked with two outs, which brought up Alexandra Lombardo. Lombardo came through with a single the other way to right field to drive in Allie Brown and Goldman. Val Nobrega followed with a RBI single to score Lawton for a 4-0 advantage.
Lawton threw a complete game, struck out four and surrendered just four hits.
Holy Cross will play No. 3 Wamogo next week in a semifinal game on either Monday or Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.
