As reported earlier today, the No. 12 St. Paul girls soccer team upset No. 5 Housatonic 4-2 in Falls Village to advance to the Class S quarterfinal round.
This will be the fourth appearance in a quarterfinal for the Falcons. The other three ended in defeat. Here’s what happened:
2009
Class S
No. 18 seed
St. Paul came into the tournament with a 7-8-1 record, but took down No. 15 SMSA by a 4-0 score to reach the second round. The Falcons then upset No. 2 Parish Hill 3-1 to set up a quarterfinal against No. 7 Shepaug Valley in Washington. Shepaug won 6-1, but lost in the semifinal round to eventual co-champion Immaculate of Danbury.
1986
Class M
No. 9 seed
Playing in a 16-team bracket, St. Paul defeated No. 8 New Fairfield 6-1 to reach the quarterfinal round for the second straight year. The Falcons gave No. 1 Farmington all it could handle before falling 1-0 in a match played at Simsbury High School. The Indians were co-champions with Wethersfield.
1985
Class L
No. 7 seed
You read that right. St. Paul played in Class L (there were only two classes). The Falcons hosted Danbury (winner over Newington) and bested their quests 2-1 in three overtimes. That put St. Paul in its first quarterfinal, where it lost 2-0 to eventual state champion Wilton in a match played at Amity Regional High School in Woodbridge.
