Banner weekend coming for Holy Cross at Alumni Field

It’s an historic weekend at Holy Cross High School.
Today, the Crusader boys soccer team takes on Torrington at 3:30 p.m. in the first regular season event to be played on Alumni Field. The former baseball and softball outfields have been turned into a great facility for soccer and football.
The celebration comes tomorrow.
Here’s what a flyer from the school says:

“Please join us as we officially celebrate the opening of Holy Cross’s newest athletic field!”

An opening ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. At 1 p.m., Holy Cross football kicks off against Waterbury foe Kennedy in the season opener. The Crusaders are looking for a “Green Out” from their supporters, so wear green if you support HC.
A reception will occur in the school courtyard following the game. Those who attend the reception must be 21 years of age or older.
Admission prices for tomorrow’s events are as follows: $5 for the game, $40 for the reception.
Those wishing to attend the reception can RSVP by calling 203-574-5422, ext. 264, or by emailing mphelan@holycrosshsct.com

Here’s a little bit on each game:

BOYS SOCCER
Torrington: The Red Raiders are looking for redemption after a rough 6-10 season. There are a pair of All-Iron players leading the way for Mike Fritch’s crew, according to a preview from Litchfield County Sports.
Holy Cross: The Crusaders hope to get back to the Class S state tournament, and get out of the first round. Holy Cross was 9-8 in 2015. The Crusaders will be guided by new head coach Gabriel Goja, who was previously at Chase Collegiate. Holy Cross has six seniors who will lead the way, according to a preview on The Goal Zone (Republican-American).

FOOTBALL
Tomorrow at 1
Kennedy: The Eagles went 3-7 last year, but all of their wins came in the NVL Brass Division. That’s where Kennedy opens this season. The Eagles want to run the ball, and that’s what they’ll look to do. Here’s the Kennedy preview on The Zone.
Holy Cross: The Crusaders obviously want to improve on last year’s 2-8 record, and they can get off to a good start with a win at home on the new Alumni Field. Holy Cross returns three starters on offense and defense. Other skill players got playing time, but it will need to develop its offensive and defensive lines, according to a preview from GameTimeCT. The Crusaders will have plenty of emotion playing on the new Alumni Field. They will need to control that emotion and execute to come out with a win.
