TRI-STATE PLAYOFFS: Wolcott Scrappers win opener

The Wolcott Scrappers rode the solid pitching of Zach Sehnal and T.J. Williams to a 3-2 Sunday afternoon victory over the Tri-Town Trojans in Game 1 of their Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League second round playoff series.
No. 3 Wolcott has a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series against No. 6 Tri-Town. Game 2 is tonight at 7 o’clock with the Trojans as the home team. All games are at Wolcott’s BAW Complex because the field has lights. Community Field in Litchfield, the home of Tri-Town, doesn’t have lights.
Sehnal struck out five and scattered eight hits over seven innings. The Scrappers then gave the ball to Williams, who pitched the final two innings.
Ryan Andrade’s RBI single in the bottom off the seventh inning brought in the winning run for Wolcott. Israel Lugo plated the other Scrapper runs with a two-run double.
Landon Gardella had a pair of RBI singles for Tri-Town.

In other Tri-State action:

The defending champion Litchfield Cowboys won 13-6 at Deland Field in Watertown to steal Game 1 from the 2016 regular season and Stan Musial state champion Watertown Blaze. No. 8 Litchfield leads the series 1-0 over No. 1 Watertown. Game 2 is Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. at Lichfield High School.

The No. 5 Bethlehem Plowboys ripped the No. 4 Terryville Black Sox 12-4 in Game 1 of their best-of-three series. Bethlehem leads the series 1-0. Game 2 is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Fuessenich Park in Torrington.

The No. 2 Naugatuck Dogs shut out the No. 7 Torrington Rebels 2-0 at Rotary Field. Naugatuck leads the series 1-0. Game 2 is tonight at 7 o’clock at Fuessenich Park.
