The Sacred Heart boys basketball team withstood an early charge from a fired-up Kennedy squad and won going away, 95-71 inside the Jack Taglia Gymnasium at Kennedy High School Tuesday night.
The Hearts improved to 13-2 overall and a perfect 13-0 in the NVL (5-0 NVL Brass Division). The Eagles dropped to 11-3 and 10-3 in the NVL (2-3 Brass). Mustapha Heron led Sacred Heart with 25 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Raheem Solomon had a big night offensively with 21 points, Tyrn Flowers added 19 points and Charles Fisher tallied 13. Those numbers were from the WATR AM 1320 broadcast of the game. Solomon and Fisher had solid stat lines, according to the Waterbury Republican-American’s Joe Palladino. Solomon was credited with eight rebounds and seven assists while Fisher tallied four steals and three assists. Heron had 11 rebounds while Tyrn Flowers pulled down seven. Palladino had Riddick for nine points and five blocked shots. Riddick was a big factor underneath, when he wasn’t in foul trouble. Sacred Heart’s length proved to be a real problem as it tallied over 10 blocks in the game, according to the WATR broadcast.
For Kennedy, Jaivaun McKnight and Darryl Flowers each had 22 points, according to WATR.
A Fisher 3 just before the first quarter buzzer put the Hearts up 25-18 after the opening eight minutes. Sacred Heart extended the lead to 50-34 by the half and 76-54 by the conclusion of the third quarter. The Hearts led by as much as 33 points in the fourth quarter before the benches were emptied.
Sacred Heart hosts Torrington Friday at Alumni Hall at 7 p.m. Huge games loom at Crosby (Feb. 9), home against Wilby (Feb. 12) and away against Holy Cross (Feb. 16), but the Hearts have to get past the Red Raiders first.
Kennedy travels to Wilby Saturday for a 1 p.m. game. After that, it’s games against Holy Cross at home (Feb. 9) and Crosby on the road (Feb. 11).
