Those who got to watch or to listen the SCSU-Bentley Northeast-10 Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday were treated to an instant classic.
When it was finally over, the Owls prevailed over the Falcons, 113-111 in double overtime at Dana Arena in Waltham, Mass.
The game itself was crazy, but the scoring effort put up by junior Michael Mallory, a former Holy Cross standout, was absolutely insane.
Mallory exploded for a single-game team record of 47 points in the SCSU victory.
Mallory did nearly half of his damage in the overtimes alone. Mallory scored an astounding 22 of his team’s 26 points and connected on 7-of-12 shots from the field, including 5-of-8 behind the arc. He made 3-of-4 foul shots, grabbed three rebounds and dished out an assist.
For the day, Mallory fired up 42 shots,
including 24 three-point attempts. He made 16 field goals overall, including 10 3-pointers. Mallory was 5-of-7 from the foul line. He played 46 of a
possible 50 minutes, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists.
Fellow NVL standout Desmond Williams of Torrington torched Bentley for 36 points, including 23 in the first half. He shot 14-of-28 from the field, 3-of-6 from three-point range, and grabbed 15 rebounds. Williams dished out five assists and came up with three steals in 48 minutes.
The win was a huge one for SCSU (15-4, 12-2 Northeast-10 Conference). The Owls stay ahead of Adelphi (17-5, 9-5) by three games in the Southwest Division. Bentley (15-4, 12-2) fell into a tie for first in the Northeast Division with Saint Anselm (17-2, 12-2). SCSU doesn’t play again until Tuesday, when it hosts the University of Bridgeport at 7 p.m. The Owls have earned the break from actual games.
