The No. 19 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State men’s basketball team started their season with a 99-69 win over Dominican College on Saturday in Bridgeport.
As expected, junior Michael Mallory was right in the middle of it for the Owls. The former Holy Cross High School standout had 14 points, six assists and three steals in 33 minutes of play. Mallory was a leader last year and is expected to do the same this year. Mallory was a preseason All-American selection by The Basketball Times and The Sporting News, according to SCSU’s website.
Wolcott’s own Michael Bozzuto, also a junior, got a chance to play two minutes and made the most of it by draining his only shot attempt, a 3-pointer.
SCSU was led by senior Desmond Williams, who game highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five assists and two steals in 28 minutes. Williams is certainly familiar to Holy Cross and Wolcott fans, given that he starred at Torrington High School.
SCSU continues play in the Bridgeport Tournament tomorrow with a game against the University of Bridgeport.
