The Wolcott girls soccer team made it two straight wins to open the 2015 season Wednesday when they beat Torrington 4-0 on the turf of Joe Monroe Field.
Redemption is a good motivator for this Eagles bunch, who missed the postseason entirely in 2014 after a run of six straight years making the trip. Last year didn’t sit well with ninth-year head coach Chris Riviezzo, but this year has certainly gotten off on the right foot. Wolcott opened with a 5-0 win over Seymour, then played even better Wednesday in the win over Torrington.
“That’s how you want to start a season, that’s for sure,” Riviezzo said after the win Wednesday.
Junior captain Meghan Doubleday was again a force at the front for the Eagles.
“She has gotten off to a great start,” Riviezzo said.
So has sophomore Samantha Hickey, an anchor on the defensive back line. Riviezzo also likes what he sees from his sophomore daughter Taylor Riviezzo, who moved from center back to forward this year.
“She’s scoring, but it’s also opening up a lot of combination play,” the coach said.
Wolcott made good runs for much of Wednesday’s match and kept Torrington on their heels. The defense was also solid for the Eagles.
“Today especially, it was good soccer,” Riviezzo said.
Allyson Hickey and Christina Velezis are senior captains while Kayla Mayo joins Doubleday as a junior captain.
“We have some strong seniors and juniors, but a lot of freshmen and sophomores are contributing,” Riviezzo said.
Many of the girls have been playing together since a U-9 squad. The cohesiveness was on display Wednesday.
“One of the teachers just said ‘It looks like they’ve been playing together for years,” Riviezzo said.
Only two matches have been played, but it appears the Wolcott girls soccer team has put 2014 behind them.
