Former Wolcott standout quarterback Mike Nicol put together an impressive performance for Western Connecticut State University football during Saturday’s 48-33 win over Union, N.Y., at the Westside Athletic Complex in Danbury.
Nicol, who started at running back, did it all for the Colonials in the lopsided victory and earned co-Player of the Week honors from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference for his efforts.
Nicol ran the ball 34 times for 255 yards and three touchdowns. Nicol also went 1-for-1 passing for nine yards. To top it off, Nicol caught one pass for 13 yards.
Union pulled to within 24-20 just 1:12 into the third quarter. From there, Nicol helped keep Union at bay, then put them away. Taking advantage of a short field, WCSU went 33 yards in three plays, capped by Nicol’s 12-yard touchdown run. The extra point gave the Colonials a 31-20 lead with 10:15 left in the third quarter.
After Union again pulled within four points at 31-27, Nicol struck again. WCSU was provided with another short field, and the only play of the ensuing drive came from Nicol, who ran 20 yards for the touchdown. The extra point put the Colonials ahead 38-27 with 5:18 to go in the third quarter.
Nicol added a 28-yard TD run with 1:19 to play in the third quarter. WCSU went up 45-27 after the extra point.
WCSU’s next game is Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. at Plymouth State. The next home game is Sept. 26 against Framingham State at noon.
