The Holy Cross baseball team had won seven straight entering a two-game stretch against Woodland and St. Paul.
The Crusaders lost both games, 4-2 to the Hawks and 12-3 to the Falcons, to fall to 7-3. Holy Cross had hit a rough patch, but the Crusaders did what they do when they hit a rough patch…win. Holy Cross lost its season opener, 11-9, to Oxford on a walk-off grand slam after entering the bottom of the seventh inning with an eight-run lead. After that loss, the Crusaders downed Wilby-Crosby, Sacred Heart, Kennedy, Watertown, WCA, Wolcott and Naugatuck.
After the losses to Woodland and St. Paul, Holy Cross won three straight games. The Crusaders defeated Wilby-Crosby, Derby and Kennedy by a combined score of 44-2. Holy Cross is now 10-3, and it gets a chance at revenge Friday at home when it plays Woodland at 3:45 p.m. at Alumni Field.
In the 12-2 win over Wilby-Crosby on May 10, Zak Morales and Logan Bessette had two hits apiece while Bessette and Tom Galusha each drove in three runs. Morales and Andres Effes each scored three times, and Brayan Garre was the winning pitcher.
In the 13-0 victory over Derby, Tyler Ciavarella had a big night, going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. There were two hits and two runs scored apiece from Morales, Bessette and Zach Laferriere, while Galusha and Jon Diogostine both drove in two runs. Dillon Fernandes (3 innings) was the winning pitcher. Fernandes and Robert Rosko (2 innings) gave up just four hits and struck out nine.
In the 19-0 win over Kennedy, Grant Mowad led the offensive charge with two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Morales and Ryan Thomas each had two hits while Alec Ash scored two runs and drove in two more. Alex Regan drove in two runs while Effes, Diogostine and Will Tucker each scored two runs. Ash (3 innings, 4 hits) was the winning pitcher. Ash and Logan Brown (2 innings, 0 hits) combined to strike out nine batters.
