Rosa experiences ups and downs of being a true freshman college football player

In the past two games, former Bristol Central football star Victor Rosa has experienced the ups and downs that come with playing college football as a true freshman.

First, the positives. UConn won, 33-12, on Oct. 8 at Florida International University. It was a career night for Rosa, who had 89 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Rosa’s best run of the night was 61 yards. In the 25-21 loss at Ball State University this past Saturday, Rosa led the Huskies in rushing with 17 attempts and 72 yards. He also had four kickoff returns for 81 yards, including a 28-yarder following Ball State’s first touchdown of the game.

Here are the negatives. Rosa’s fumble deep in UConn territory in the fourth quarter helped Ball State get back into the game. A Cardinal touchdown followed the fumble, and the home team cut their 11-point halftime deficit to two, 21-19, with 7:24 remaining. Rosa also returned two punts for negative four yards.

UConn fell to 3-5 following Saturday’s loss, and Rosa was far from the only Husky to make a mistake. UConn went scoreless after putting up 21 points in the first half. The Husky drives in the second half ended like this: interception; punt; punt; punt; fumble; punt; and turnover on downs. UConn gained just 23 yards on 30 plays.

The Huskies have a bye week before attempting to bounce back at home against Boston College on Oct. 29 at noon.

The season to date: Rosa has played in seven of the team’s eight games. He has 269 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Rosa has 10 kickoff returns for 185 yards, or an average of 18.5 per return.
