Wolcott boys soccer’s speed the difference in home win over Watertown

The Wolcott boys soccer team possesses a tremendous amount of speed. That speed can put away close games, like one the Eagles were involved in on Thursday night at Joe Monroe Field.

On two separate occasions, Wolcott saw Watertown turn a pair of two-goal margins to one. The Warriors were pushing for the equalizer with under four minutes to play, but the Eagles countered and put the game away.

JT Plona played a ball ahead to speedster Tyson Brenes. Brenes turned on his defender and exploded down the sideline in front of the home bleachers like he was shot out of a cannon. Brenes pushed toward the goal, but at the last minute gave a nice soft ground cross to Alex Dias, who buried the ball in the net. Wolcott led by two goals again, but this time there was just 3:34 left in the game. The Eagles won, 4-2, and improved to 9-1-1 on the season. Wolcott hasn’t lost since a 1-0 defeat in its season opener at Torrington on Sept. 4. The Eagles are 9-0-1 in their last 10 games, with the tie coming against St. Paul on Sept. 20 (1-1).

On a night where Wolcott hosted its “Score For a Cure” breast cancer awareness game, Parker Zynda put the home team ahead with an unassisted goal. Tyson Brenes made it 2-0 on an assist by Connor Silva. Watertown got one back to make the score 2-1 at halftime. At halftime, Wolcott Youth Soccer played a couple games on the field.

In the second half, Damien Georges blasted a shot into the top left side of the net off a JJ Brenes assist for a 3-1 lead. Watertown again closed to within a goal, this time with 5:45 left in the second half. That set the stage for Plona, Tyson Brenes and Dias to unleash their counterattack and push Wolcott to victory.
