Holy Cross cross country sweeps Waterbury City XC Championships at home

The Holy Cross cross country teams took care of business at home on Friday afternoon in the Waterbury City XC Championships.

The Crusaders defended their girls and boys team titles in convincing fashion. The Holy Cross girls were first with a score of 15 points, the best a team can score in a meet. The Crusaders’ team scoring runners – Sofia Alonzo, Reagan Zupkus, Shania Howard, Aurora Miller and Catherine Cruess – claimed the top five spots. They were followed in sixth and seventh by Holy Cross teammates Gina Barry and Sadie Girgasky. Alonzo won the race in 23:00.5.

The Holy Cross boys took first with 17 points. The top three runners – Jake Ferrare, Ryan DePaulo and Aidan Devaney – were Crusaders. Patrick Cugliari and Kyle Lanese took fifth and sixth to round out the team scoring runners for Holy Cross. Teammates Coleman Promotico and Ray O’Connell were eighth and 10th. Ferrare won the race in 18:16.7.

WCA was second in the girls race with 55 points, followed by Kaynor Tech in third with 80 and Crosby in fourth with 98. The Spartans’ top three runners – Allie Obuobi-Djan, Samantha Ramdin and Arielle Vaichus – claimed eighth, ninth and 10th overall. They were followed by Aaniyah Richards in 12th and Lisa Serrano in 18th.

Taylor O’Connell led the Panthers with an 11th place finish while Noellani Gillians paced the Bulldogs in 15th. Wilby had two runners – Krystalee Crespo and Aniyah Blake – and they finished 13th and 14th overall.

Kaynor Tech was second in the boys race with 55 points, followed by WCA in third with 65. Daniel Reilly led the Panthers with a fifth place finish overall. He was followed by Anthony DeSantis in 8th and Andre Turner in 12th. For the Spartans, Mikael Isaacs was 10th overall, followed by Jordan Thomas in 11th. Crosby’s Emmanuel Aca was 13th overall while Wilby’s top runner was Lawrence McCalla, who claimed 21st.
