The Holy Cross girls basketball team has finished the regular season with a perfect 20-0 record.
The Crusaders averaged about 71.6 points per game and yielded just 36 points per contest. Holy Cross had two close encounters during the regular season, one outside the NVL and the other inside.
The Crusaders beat Mercy, 55-51, on Dec. 15 in the Tim McDonald Gymnasium. It was the second game of the regular season for Holy Cross. Junior Mya Zaccagnini scored a game-high 21 points while senior Cayla Howard added 18 points. Senior Nyasia Smith and freshman Shania Howard each had seven points.
On Feb. 10, Holy Cross outlasted Torrington, 64-62, in the Connie Donahue Gymnasium. Cayla Howard had a game-high 23 points for the Crusaders, but she had plenty of help. Zaccagnini scored 19 points, Smith added 12 points and senior Kristina Perry tallied six points.
Holy Cross, the top seed in the NVL tournament, opens with a quarterfinal game at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. All quarterfinal games are at Holy Cross High School. The semifinals are at Naugatuck next Tuesday with the championship final next Thursday at Kennedy.
