H.S. soccer: Holy Cross teams will be among top seeds in NVL, state tourneys

The high school soccer season is winding down, and league and state tournaments are upcoming. Here’s a look at where some of our teams stand (Teams must win 40% of their games to qualify for state competition):

Boys soccer

Holy Cross has the best record of all the local teams at 10-0-2. The only “blemishes” on the slate so far for the Crusaders are a pair of draws. Holy Cross tied Oxford, 0-0, in the season opener on Sept. 11, and it also tied Woodland, 1-1, on Oct. 13. The Crusaders figure to be a threat in both the NVL and the Class S state tournament, where they’re the second-ranked team.

Bristol Central (8-1-2) is tied for fifth in the Class L state rankings. The Rams are tied for the second-best record in the CCC with Wethersfield. Here’s my story about Central.

WCA (6-3-3) is having a great season and has already qualified for the Class M state tournament. The Spartans will be looking to improve their seeding in the state tournament, and to secure a berth in the NVL tournament.

Wolcott (4-4-2) and St. Paul (4-6-1) have some work to do to qualify for the state tournament, the Eagles in Class M and the Falcons in Class S.

Girls soccer

Holy Cross (10-2-1) is having another strong season, despite missing a couple key players due to season-ending injuries. The Crusaders lost, 3-1, at Woodland on Sept. 25, and they were defeated by Immaculate, 4-3, on Oct. 2 in a home game played at Crosby’s Jimmy Lee Stadium. Holy Cross is ranked sixth in Class S and figures to be a tough out in both the NVL and state tournaments.

St. Paul (7-6-0) has qualified for the Class S state tournament as well and will be looking to improve its seed there, along with securing a berth in the NVL tournament.

Bristol Central (4-6-1) and Wolcott (4-6-1) each have work to do to make the state tournament, the Rams in Class LL and the Eagles in Class M. Bristol Eastern (3-6-1) also has work to do to qualify for the state tournament in Class L.
