Sarah Lawton made her pitching return to Connecticut on Sunday with the Junior Brakettes, a new team started by the Stratford Brakettes this year.
Lawton pitched the final 2.2 innings, struck out two and walked one in the 3-2 victory. She was credited with the win in her debut.
Lawton entered with one out in the top of the fifth inning of a 2-2 game against the Maryland Chill at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford. Maryland had runners on first and second, but Lawton picked up a strikeout and a comebacker to end the threat.
In the top of the sixth inning, Lawton gave up a one-out walk and another batter reached on an error. The runner on second base was picked off, however, and Lawton recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
Kaitlyn Flood doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, then Rebecca Findley was hit by a pitch. Flood and Findley moved up to third and second on a wild pitch, then Flood scored on Katie Sciglimpaglia’s bunt for a 3-2 lead.
Lawton recorded three groundouts, one to Findley at third base and two to Sciglimpaglia at second base to end the game. Lawton will pitch at Florida Gulf Coast University after two successful seasons at Florida SouthWestern State College. Right now, she’s working with the Junior Brakettes.
