Wolcott baseball hands Holy Cross first loss

Holy Cross baseball didn’t lose in its first 10 games of the season. Ten games up, 10 games down in the Crusader win column.

Wolcott went 8-1 in its first nine games. The Eagles ended the first half of the season by making sure the Crusaders would no longer be undefeated. Wolcott scored in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings on the way to a 6-2 win over Holy Cross on Thursday afternoon at Holy Cross High School. It’s the lone meeting of the regular season between the NVL powers. They could meet again in the NVL Tournament in May.

Dane Hassan, Trey Nastri, Jeff Nicol, Tyler Brzankalski and Matt Northrop each scored a run for the Eagles. On the mound, Drewry pitched the first 5 2/3 innings and picked up the win (1 run, 7 hits, 7 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 hit batter). Hassan threw the last 1 1/3 innings (1 run, 2 hits, 1 strikeout, 1 walk).

Wolcott scored a run in the top of the second inning and two more in the third to go ahead 3-0. Holy Cross put up its first run in the bottom of the third inning to get to within 3-1. The Eagles responded with a run in the fourth inning, then tacked on two more in the sixth to build a 6-1 advantage. The Crusaders added the game’s final run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Wolcott is scheduled to host Naugatuck on Saturday at 1 p.m. Holy Cross is slated to play Woodland Regional on Monday in Beacon Falls at 3:30 p.m.
