HIGH 5 OF THE WEEK: Milardo named GNAC Pitcher of the Week

Former St. Paul standout Alessandra Milardo was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after picking up her first win of the season.

Milardo struck out a season-high seven and walked three over five shutout innings in a 9-0 University of Saint Joseph victory over Bay Path during the second game of their March 24 doubleheader. She gave up two hits in a complete-game effort. No runner got past second base against Milardo.

It was a big win for the sophomore Milardo, who had lost her first four decisions of the season. She has two complete games in the five games she has started. USJ improved to 7-7 with the win with the doubleheader sweep of Bay Path.

Kylie Rice, Emmanuel College lacrosse

The former Holy Cross star had another big week and once again made the GNAC weekly honor roll.

In two games, Rice tallied 10 points on four goals and six assists. Rice made a big impact in a 23-3 win over Bay Path with two goals and five assists. Emmanuel lost 15-12 to Curry College in the other game of the week. Rice had two goals and one assist in that game for the Saints.

It’s the second time Rice has made the GNAC honor roll. In five games, the junior has 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) and 32 of her 40 shots (80 percent) have been on goal.

Kyle MacLean, Western Connecticut State University baseball

The former St. Paul slugger has been a bright spot for the Colonials early on in the 2019 season.

MacLean has played in all 13 games for WCSU and leads the team in at bats (47), home runs (2) and RBI (11), and he’s tied for the top spot in hits (14). MacLean is hitting .298 with two doubles and 10 runs scored for the Colonials, who are off to a tough start at 1-12.

MacLean homered in both games of a March 14 doubleheader against Kenyon College.

Jill Kilmer, Sacred Heart University track and field

The former multi-sport standout at St. Paul has put in some great efforts as the indoor season gave way to the outdoor campaign.

Kilmer finished sixth in the pentathlon at the ECAC indoor track championship meet on March. She tallied a personal-best 3,349 points in the pentathlon.

The Pioneers began their outdoor season at the Wesleyan Spring Classic on March 23, and Kilmer had several good efforts at the meet. Kilmer finished second in the 200m by .04 second to teammate Fahra Whichard (26.63 seconds to 26.59). In the long jump, Kilmer was second to teammate Brianna DeGennaro, with Kilmer jumping 17 feet, 1¼ inches and DeGennaro going 17 feet, 6¼ inches. Kilmer also finished second in the high jump (5 feet, 1¾ inches).

Kilmer is a junior at SHU.

Mike Chiovitti, University of Connecticut baseball

The former Holy Cross standout made the move from Avery Point to the Division I program, and his first hit was one to remember.

On March 9, UConn found itself in a 1-1 tie against Texas State. The game entered the top of the 12th inning, and Paul Gozzo led it off with a home run to left field. Chiovitti was the next batter, and he sent an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for a homer and a 3-1 lead for the Huskies. The home run was the first hit of Chiovitti’s career at UConn.

Chiovitti has played in 18 of the team’s first 22 games, including three starts. He still has just the one hit, but he has walked five times and scored six runs for the Huskies.
