Wolcott football loses state quarterfinal at Sheehan

Seventh-seeded Wolcott football went into Tuesday night’s Class M state quarterfinal game as the underdog against second-seeded Sheehan in Wallingford.

The Titans have an ultra-talented running back in junior Terrance Bogan, and he had another big game in a 43-20 victory over the Eagles at Sheehan High School’s Riccitelli Field. Bogan rushed for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Sheehan (10-1) will host No. 3 Berlin (10-1), a 16-6 winner over No. 6 Brookfield, on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in a state semifinal game.

Wolcott finished the season at 7-4. Senior Anthony Ligi led the Eagles with 217 yards rushing and all three touchdowns. Ligi scored on runs of 27, 41 and 54 yards. Ligi’s 27-yard touchdown run cut the Wolcott deficit to 14-6 in the second quarter, but Sheehan ran the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown and the Titans never let the Eagles get within single digits again.

It was the final game for Wolcott seniors Ligi, Thomas Turrell, Jamil Lawrence, Jemeni Colon, Matt Olmstead, Nate Olmstead, Mason Desaulniers, Jake Sforza, Shay Lawlor, Jake Filippone, Dean Howell, James Perazzella, Logan Lussier, Michael Ignacio, Kyle LaRosa and Jacob Bernabe.

It was also the last game for head coach Matt Hove, who resigned earlier this month after an incident in the locker room at St. Paul.
