St. Paul senior Christian Sturm ended his high school outdoor track and field career at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor meet in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday.
Sturm competed in the hammer throw and finished 26th in the country in the championship field with a throw of 177 feet, 6 inches. Sturm has won the state championship in the hammer throw each of the last two seasons. He beat out Coventry junior Joseph Lanham for the 2018 state championship with a throw of 187-07 to Lanham’s 173-05. Lanham finished 20th in the New Balance meet at 182-00. In 2017, Sturm won his first title with a throw of 158-05.
It was Sturm’s third time competing in the New Balance meet. He took 33rd place in the hammer as a sophomore in 2016, then finished 23rd as a junior in 2017.
Besides the state title, Sturm turned in a first place effort in the hammer at the 38th O’Grady Relays on April 28 at Danbury High School. Sturm’s best that day was 178-05.
