Not too long ago, Monday’s Holy Cross-Wolcott baseball game at Holy Cross High School looked like a potential showdown.
After games played on April 24, the Eagles were a perfect 9-0. The Crusaders suffered their first loss, 5-3 to a good Montville team.
How quickly things change.
Holy Cross and Wolcott battled in unseasonably cold and windy conditions atop the field on Oronoke Road, but the Crusaders had the last laugh. Will Marshall drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning for a 4-3 victory.
Holy Cross has won three straight games to get to 12-1. Wolcott has lost three straights, all by a single run, and has dropped to 9-3.
Austin Brown hurled 3 2/3 innings of relief and picked up the win for the Crusaders. Brett Adams took the loss for the Eagles.

Holy Cross scored once in the first inning, then twice in the fourth for a 3-0 lead against Wolcott starter Jack Drewry. The Eagle counterpunch was a three-run burst in the top of the fifth inning against Crusader ace Fran Phelan Jr. Phelan was out of the game in the seventh inning, Drewry lasted eight full frames.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Will Greene led off with a walk. After a strikeout, Tim Zupkus walked, then Greene and Zupkus moved up a base on a passed ball. Connor Goggin was intentionally walked, which brought Brian Parzyck to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. Parzyck grounded into a fielder’s choice, shortstop Ethan Gillotti to Jeff Nichol, for the second out.
That brought up Marshall, who worked a 3-0 count. After a strike made it 3-1, Marshall walked and brought home Greene with the winning run.
Each side has two more games this week, on Wednesday and Friday.
