St. Paul has been making trips every couple of years to Disney World in Florida to play softball, bond as a team, and have fun.
The ninth-seeded Falcons have been on a fairy tale ride in this year’s Class S state tournament, and the most exciting moment so far came on Wednesday night in West Haven.
St. Paul stormed back from an 8-2 deficit against No. 12 Coventry and won 9-8 in its first semifinal appearance since 2000. The Falcons went wild after Abby Poirot made a diving catch in left field for the final out (nice video from Josh Kestenbaum of The Bristol Press). St. Paul will make its first appearance ever in the state final on Friday night.
The opponent is a very familiar one. It’s two-time defending Class S champion Holy Cross, the No. 2 seed in the bracket. The Falcons and Crusaders play at 7 p.m. Friday back at Frank Biondi Softball Field in West Haven.
Holy Cross won the only meeting in the regular season by a score of 5-3 on May 1 at Holy Cross High School. This time, the Falcons and Crusaders meet with everything on the line.
BASEBALL DATE, TIME
Top-seeded Holy Cross will face second-seeded Lyman Memorial-Lebanon in the Class S final on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Palmer Field in Middletown. The Crusaders and Bulldogs are both seeking their first state championship in baseball. Each school is 0-2 in state finals.
