The season did not start well for Wolcott football.
Green in many areas due to graduation losses, the Eagles were handed a 62-21 loss at home by the Ansonia Chargers last Friday.
Wolcott needed a fresh start, and it got it last night on the Ray Snyder Sr. Field turf at Waterbury’s Municipal Stadium complex. In a battle of Eagles, Wolcott won going away in a 54-0 rout.
Wolcott struck a nice balance between pass and run. Mike Polzella threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns on 14-of-18 attempts. Polzella spread the wealth to four different receivers, who each had at least three receptions. Steve Urbanski tallied a high of five catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns, including one scoring play of 51 yards. Nick Longo (67 yards), Justin Fernandes (43 yards, 1 TD) and Mike Ciarlo (33 yards) each hauled in three passes.
Ray Iorio led the Wolcott ground attack (213 yards) with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Polzella and Anthony Ligi also had rushing touchdowns.
Wolcott converted all seven of its third down attempts.
Wolcott had plenty of contributions on defense from Bobby Stoeckert, Dylan Prescott, Ethan Miner, Colin Pawlak and Urbanski. Wolcott limited Kennedy’s rushing attack to just 57 yards. Kennedy had a mere five yards passing. Wolcott had an interception and a fumble recovery.
Other than penalties (9 for 65 yards), it was a good night and a confidence boost for Wolcott.
Wolcott hosts Crosby this coming Friday on the turf of Joe Monroe Field at 6:30 p.m. One team will end that game above .500 (2-1).
