Mills boys put together perfect week

The Lewis Mills boys basketball team had a tremendous week and moved closer to the .500 mark.

The Spartans went 3-0 and picked up victories over Middletown, Conard-West Hartford and Northwestern Regional-Winsted. Mills started with a 48-46 squeaker on Jan. 13 at Middletown. On Jan. 17, the Spartans got some revenge against Conard with a 66-58 home win. The Red Wolves had won the previous game, 57-55, on a 3-pointer in the final seconds.

Mills completed a great week with a 64-40 home win over Northwestern on Jan. 18. The Spartans, who reached the Division III state final last season but lost a lot to graduation, improved to 5-7 with the three wins.

Sophomore Tommy Dinunzio was a monster during the three victories. He averaged 30 points and 15 rebounds, starting with 29 and 17 against Middletown. Dinunzio followed that up with 28, 15 and four assists against Conard, then tallied 33 and 15 against Northwestern.

Another big-time performer was senior co-captain Gavin Daly. He averaged 17 points and five assists over the three wins. Daly started with 10 points against Middletown, then had a monster night of 22 points and four assists against Conard. He ended his week with 17 points and six assists against Northwestern.

There were some other good efforts in the three-game stretch. Sophomore Gavin Grustas put up nine points in the win at Middletown. Senior Brett Harding had 10 points against Conard in his return to the lineup. Fellow senior Chad Edmond recorded six points against the Red Wolves. Sophomore Will Green and senior Ethan Braddock provided some solid minutes in the win over Northwestern.

Mills has some time off before a tough road game against Manchester on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. After a road game at nearby Bristol Central on Jan. 27, the Spartans will be home against Simsbury and Avon on Jan. 29 and Jan. 31.
